Moving
Ahead- Thanks to the City Council
The adoption of an ordinance to ban so-called puppy mills in San Juan
County and the request for proposals for design of a new regional animal
shelter denoted progress for animal lovers during the last month.
The Farmington City Council okayed the sale ban, as the first of a
series of revisions to the ordinances in September. This means that any
animal-dog, cat, turtle, gerbil, etc. may not be sold in public places,
i.e. shopping centers, parks, malls, etc. The violation of the ordinance
carries a $500 fine.
Councilor Mary Fischer, who helped facilitate the new law, said the
ban would prevent inhumane treatment of animals, indiscriminate breeding
and licensing of breeders. The law still permits sale of animals
through advertising or signs in private yards. Other sections of the
Farmington Animal Ordinances are still being updated.
In other actions, the city has advertised for proposals as the
first step in a hoped-for regional shelter. (See story inside on how an
Arizona county
handles their homeless animals)
Mary Winkley - a
Super Volunteer
Already a long-time volunteer with the San Juan Animal League Mary
Winkley
hopes she can continue to serve for many more years.
Her love of animals and spirit of serving has kept her as a member
of SJAL for more than nine years. She recalls beginning making ID tags
and then being a foster animal “mother” while Sybil McDaniel was
president.
Continuing her association, Mary has now served as board secretary
for the last three years.
She has a degree in archaeology-an achievement which brought her to
New Mexico from Virginia. Presently, she does design and drafting for
Souter, Miller and Associates.
With her husband, John, Mary enjoys mountain biking and hiking and
of course her animal family of a dog and three cats.
Lots of
Barking Going On!
“Business”
at the San Juan Animal League Clinics this year has been especially
brisk. For the seven clinics held so far in 2007, there was a total of
2044 individual animals served and 3836 shots administered.
Largest clinics were in September in Farmington with 701 shots given
and 365 animals served and in Aztec in March with 627 shots given to 343
dogs and cats.
Many thanks for these successes go to Vicky Ramakka, clinic
director; Dr. Chris Bauer, veterinarian and the many, many volunteers.
The final clinic of the year will be on Sunday, November 11 at
Naabi Ana School in Bloomfield
Volunteers are always needed at all of The San Juan Animal League
Clinics.
